Stornoway Golf Club was originally founded in 1890 on the present day grounds of Stornoway Airport.  The Air Ministry requisitioned the grounds at the start of the 2nd World War in 1939.  In 1947 the Golf Club was re-sited within the grounds of Lews Castle with the help of compensation from the Air Ministry.

You can read some of the documents the Trust have regarding the golf club - here we have an extract from 1891 Crofters Commission report granting Lady Matheson the rights to play golf on the Melbost and Steinish common grazings.  Here we have correspondence between John R Stutt Ltd (the golf course constructors) and various other parties regarding the new course.
