Biodiversity
The site, which was planted in the 19th century, is now dominated by mature broadleaved woodland. There are, also, significant areas of amenity grassland, in front of the castle.
The woodland is almost entirely man‐made, predominantly deciduous interspersed with coniferous and mixed stands, with some exotic species. Most trees are now mature, and some are dying.
There is some regeneration, but this has been hindered in the past by grazing. The shrubs and ground flora are typical of secondary woodland.
The moorland and open water areas on the site contain a greater variety of plants and animals because of the adjacent woodland.
