The River & Woodlands

Heron illustration

The Wider Estate is crisscrossed with an extensive network of paths for walkers and cyclists, these wind through open moorland, coastline, wooded hill, and riverside.

As you explore these tracks you will pass Victorian follies, an outlaw’s hiding place and an ancient tomb with benches and amazing viewpoints sprinkled throughout.

Popular routes include the River Creed a pleasant level walk along a managed salmon river.  Gallows Hill, the highest point on the estate with a Neolithic tomb on its summit, a heronry on its slopes and glorious views over Stornoway.

The Shore Road walk passes the inner harbour with its working fishing boats, Cuddy Point once a WW2 seaplane base, Sober Island with its Neolithic secrets and ending at the River Creed, where otters can sometimes be seen hunting amongst the rocks.
